THEN MTV Canada came in the next week to do a segment on us for MTV Select and they liked us (read: Jervais) so much that they’re coming back again to do another segment on Knotty Boy and our salon!

In the first show Jervais sat down with Stephanie and talked about dreads and the music industry and all about Knotty Boy. The first show aired Thursday, April 29th, and the second piece will be airing within the next two weeks! Check the News Box on the main page for times! So keep your eyes peeled for that, Canadian digital cable have-ers out there.

Hm...in the eloquent words of Stewart Smalley, hey, I guess we’re good enough, we’re smart enough and doggone it, people like us!  *aw*

OK, next item of importance!

Remember how we were telling you about how we totally met our goals and sponsored those five new little kids at the end of December last year? Well, things got a wee hectic these past few months, what with all the store openings and what-nots and what-have-yous, so we didn't get a chance to put their adorable pictures and info online until now. But they're up now, so go have a look at these gorgeous kids and their stories. They've sent us artwork and letters, too, some of them bringing *some* of us to tears (yeah ok, I'm a big softy alright!! grr... ). K, but seriously, it's the best feeling in the whole world hearing how well these little guys are doing because we've been able to help them out, and you should feel great about that, too! Without you kids and your support, we couldn't have done it, and that ain't no joke. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts!

Ahh, grad time! Yep, we know loads of you are graduating from all the different levels of imposed life education this time of year. If you're looking for some deadly ways of wearing your dreads for all the subsequent events, have another peekero at our for some really good ideas and photos. And hey, if you do something extra-delish with your dreads that we haven't thought of, send us a pic and tell us about it - you know we love to show you off (and it's not like our dread gallery is big enough or anything! *snicker*).

Jervais, or ‘Tips' as we like to call her around here (as in ‘thanks, Tips', usually said jokingly after she's pointed out the obvious about something... ahh, good times, good times), YES, Jervais is here with some tricks up her knotty sleeve for a Martha-styles SPRING CLEANING for your luscious locks - but don't worry, we're pretty sure these insider secrets won't send you to the slammer. Get the winter musties out and put some life and fresh air back up there this spring, especially just in time for meeting other dreadful hotties here in Vancouver - and hoo boy, there's a lot of them .

Oh, so NOW you're thinking about making the trip, aren't you... cheeky monkeys...

So without further ado, heeeeeere's Jervais!

Spring cleaning for your dreads!

Dread maintenance is a great way to care for your locks, regardless of how tight and well-formed they are. Both old and new locks can benefit from having maintenance - here's the dealio on getting your dreads professionally loved and spring-cleaned!

Step 1 - Find someone who offers dread maintenance.

- Check the Knotty Boy Dealer Locator for someone in your area that does dreads, they're quite likely to also be offering maintenance.

- Ask the stylist lots of questions about dreads. A good stylist will be happy to answer any and all questions you have about dreads and maintaining them. A true dreaducator will ask how often you wash them, what you use to wash them, if you use any products or oils and if you palm roll them and how often. Trust your instincts on who you allow to love your locks.

Step 2 - Know what should happen at a maintenance session.

Here at the Knotty Boy Lock Shop, a maintenance appointment will start off with me asking you a few questions. I generally ask how old you r d reads are, how often you wash them, what you are washing them with, and then I ask you what you would like fixed. At that point you tell me any and all things that are bothering you about you r d reads, we talk a little about how to prevent those problems from happening and I tell you what I can do for you. If you've had maintenance before, I'll generally ask about the method the stylist used and how you like it. Once I've gathered all the necessary information, it's time to start!

Based on our little question and answer period, I'll have decided with you what type of maintenance is best for you. We're all about options here and we combine a lot of different maintenance methods to come up for the perfect one for your individual dreads. These combinations may include string ties, crocheting, palm rolling, twisting-and-flipping and others.

At this point you may choose to start with a Dread Deep-Cleaning Wash or we can get right to the maintenance. I'll work my magic on your dreads, and all you need to do is sit back and feel pampered!

Now that everything is fixed regarding all those loose hairs and loops, it's time to move on to some dread shaping and refreshing . First I'll palm-roll your dreads if needed. Again, a combination of methods and products can be used, ie. wax, no wax, tightening gel, no tightening gel, wet, dry, etc - whatever works best. Once this is done, you're sprayed down with one of our yummy concoctions to freshen up those locks and make you smell simply dreadilicious!

After your dreads are all loved up, we go over any new aftercare you might need to start doing to keep you d eads fabulous for as long as possible. For example, you may need to wash your hair more regularly than you have been, rinse better, use less or more of a product, etc.

And that's it! Your dreads are sparkly clean, look good and smell great, and you can walk around feeling all spiffy and new!

Be sure to check out our NEW AND IMPROVED Dread Services page of the website, too, for contact info and more details on what we can do for your ‘do!

See the difference it can make?!

Before After

What's that? You can't make it into the Knotty Boy Lock Shop for maintenance and want to give it a whirl yourself? I don't blame you, if people had nick-named me "Stinky-McStink-A-Lot" I'd be wanting to give it a try, too! Okay, so maybe no one is calling you names, but what a good opportunity to make sure they never do. Check out some of these do-it-yourself tips and tricks listed below:

- Hop in the shower and wash those dreadies! While doing it, imagine you are washing away all your winter blues and making room for lots of summer love!

- Rinse like it's going out of style. The better you rinse, the better they'll smell and look in the long run.

- Next, treat that stressed-out scalp of yours to a Knot-Tea scalp rinse . I recommend the Lasqui-Tea Island Chai for freshening dreads and stimulating hair growth, and the Texeda Island Twist for freshening dreads and soothing itchies. Give these a try if your scalp feels less than ready for spring. Rinsing out the Knot-Teas is optional.

- Let your dreads air dry or dry them as you usually do, but the point is to make sure they're bone-dry to avoid them getting musty.

- Sort out that helmet of fuzz! Hunt and gather those frizzies, then tie a piece of durable thread (not cotton) around them at the base of your dread, or grab your granny's crochet hook and go to town by pulling the dread through itself at the base (#5 hook is my fav), or crochet loose hairs back and forth right into the dread.

- Now that you've dealt with the fuzzies, finish off the job with some of Knotty Boy's sweet smelling Locksteady Tropical Tightening Gel to get those newly tightened dreads even tighter and yummy smelling!

Alright, dudes and dudettes! Time for me to go bask in the sun and think of a comeback to the "Tips" nickname-thing Adrianna so lovingly decided to share with you all! Check out the next eZine for even more dreaducation from your number Royal Dreadness (yes, me! duh!).

Jervais (aka Hairoine)

It don't get any easier to get free stuff, champ, compliments of Knotty Boy.

Is that it? Man, there's been a lot of crazy stuff going down here at the DreadQuarters these past few months, its hard to keep track of everything... So in case we've missed anything, keep checking back to see what's new every once in a while, and the News Box on the main page of the site is updated pretty regularly to let you know what's up lately, too.

SO until our next Knotty Boy eZine in the dog-days of June... stay cool, stay knotty, keep hitting us with those Surveys to let us know how we're doing and how we can improve and we'll see you again soon!

Love to you all,

The Knotty Crew
