One of our main objectives here at Knotty Boy is to attempt to dispel many of the myths that exist about dreadlocks, which is precisely why we dedicate so much time on this website describing how to care for them!

One of the most prevalent myths about dreadlocks is that they always smell bad and cannot be washed. The truth is, just like braids or regular hair, dreadlocks ARE NOT stinky or smelly unless their owner is putting something weird in there or not caring for them properly.

Many people who choose to let their hair lock without the use of products like the Knotty Boy Dread Wax, which helps dramatically speed up the long process, will stop washing their hair because they believe the buildup of natural oils is good for starting dreads. This is also a fallacy. Oil lubricates and conditions hair making it more difficult for knots to form, and oily buildup will also begin to smell over time. Washing the hair and stripping it of these oils will make locks form faster because knots are, in fact, created more easy in dry, clean, unconditioned hair.
