Knotty Boy is committed to the manufacturing of completely all-natural body products. This includes using only the purest and highest-quality ingredients available on the market today that are as close to their source of origin as possible. Most of the ingredients you will recognize as being safe for use on your body. Some you will not recognize from their scientific name, but will soon understand what they are and where they naturally come from after reading their descriptions.
The only exception to this all-natural imperative is the Knotty Boy Emergency Dreadlock Removal Kit Shampoo and Conditioner. Along with the all-natural ingredients we normally use in our shampoos and conditioners, these particular products also contain a few of the much-discussed coconut-derived ingredients (but never SLS's) in order to increase efficiency in detangling and removing something as difficult as dreadlocks from hair.
However, please note that we have made every effort to ensure that these are absolutely the most safe and mild of all the synthetic ingredients approved for use in body products in the industry. The Emergency Dreadlock Removal Kit is the only exception to our strict commitment of manufacturing truly all-natural products but we have kept its ingredients as close to all-natural as possible.
These ingredients are still far more safe than what you would find in normal drugstore hair products and are typically used in most 'natural' hair products you would find in health-food stores. So don't be frightened by the big ingredient names – please read on for more info.
Knotty Boy Dread Wax
Beeswax, Certified Organic Hempseed Oil, Avocado Oil, Kukui Nut Oil, Jojoba Oil, Shea Nut Butter, Vitamin E Oil, Walnut Extract (Dark Wax only)
Beeswax Beeswax acts as a natural emulsifier and texturizer in hair and skin care products. Knotty Boy uses only the purest cleaned, filtered, natural beeswax which has not been bleached or chemically treated.
The Knotty Boy Dread Wax fragrance you smell is nothing more than the smell of fresh honey due to the purity of the beeswax we use. It is also less even-coloured than most because of this level of purity. Often beeswax is bleached, and then diluted with other synthetic waxes like paraffin, reducing the effectiveness of the beeswax. Excessive heating of beeswax also reduces its benefits, such as its ability to resist airborne particles like dust, so our wax is carefully prepared in small batches at the lowest temperature possible.
Beeswax is made by the female worker-bee for honeycomb, so it is a natural by-product of her work. To produce one pound of beeswax, the worker bee herself eats about ten pounds of honey, flies 150,000 miles, and visits 33 million flower blossoms. Beeswax is truly magic stuff, and we are grateful to the bees that make it!

Avocado Oil Avocado Oils is one of the most moisturizing oils provided by nature. It has a high percentage of non-saponifiables – the portion of the oil which does not react to form soap, but retains its natural makeup. Avocado Oil is also highly therapeutic, containing protein, amino acids and large amounts of vitamins A, D & E, helping with cell regeneration of scaly skin and scalp tissues.
Kukui Nut Oil Kukui Nut Oil is expeller-pressed from the nut of the Kukui tree. The Hawaiian word "kukui" means "enlightened," and this highly penetrating oil was treasured by ancient Hawaiians for its soothing and healing properties. It is valued by today's islanders for those same qualities of making skin supple and renewed. Kukui Nut oil is an outstanding emollient that is absorbed quickly and thoroughly, and leaves no greasy after-feel. Kukui Nut Oil has earned its historic reputation through generations of use, providing nature's relief for dry skin, and easing the symptoms of eczema and psoriasis. Allergy note: The Kukui is classified as a nut, but like Coconut, there are very few, if any, documented cases of allergic reactions to this nut. Having said this, it is always good to exercise extreme caution if you have severe nut allergies and discuss usage of this product with your doctor.
Jojoba Oil Jojoba Oil contains mystiric acid, proteins and a collagen-like protein making it ideal for hair care products. Extracted from the seeds of the desert shrub simondsia chinesis, Joboba has excellent spreading, lubricating and penetrating properties. More like a wax than oil, it does not go rancid, making it ideal for personal body care products. Jojoba Oil is excellent for hair and scalp conditioning, and is useful in oily-skin treatments.
Shea Nut Butter A natural lipid obtained from the fruit of the Karite tree of Ghana, butyrosperum parkii, the slightly greenish butter from the Shea Nut has soothing protecting qualities and sunscreening properties. Shea Nut Butter adds and maintains moisture in dry, brittle hair, in addition to revitalizing, repairing and preventing breakage, and promoting hair growth. Allergy note Shea Nut Butter is not actually from a nut, but is derived from pressing the whole fruit, which is much like an avocado.
Vitamin E Oil Used as an antioxidant in carrier oils, vitamin E oil is vegetable-derived and is a completely natural preservative that helps prevent other oils from turning rancid in body care products. Its antioxidant properties also help to repair hair and skin damage caused by stress and the environment.
Walnut Extract (Dark Wax only) Walnut husks have been used for centuries as a natural color for textiles, hair and to add dark brown tannin to inks for painting, writing and drawing. Pliny the Elder, before his death in 79 AD in the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius at Pompeii, recorded the use of walnut shells in a recipe for keeping the white (or gray as we now call it) from one's hair. The Ladies Dictionary of 1694 also cites the use of walnut husks for darkening the hair.

A natural soap, like both Knotty Boy Natural Dreadlock Shampoo Bar and Liquid Shampoo, simply releases surface tension on the part being scrubbed, allowing the loosened dirt, grime, and environmental impurities to be washed away - without unnecessary amounts of foam.
Up until recently, it was not possible to manufacture a truly all natural liquid shampoo, despite the over-abundance of claimed ‘all-natural’ shampoos on the market (including other liquid shampoos marketed specifically for use on dreadlocked hair). The fact is, most ‘all natural’ shampoos still blend commercial surfactants like Sodium Lauryl Sulphate (SLS) into their shampoos to boost foaming action. SLS is the most commonly used chemical surfactant by cleaning-product manufacturers but often appears as ‘coconut-derived’ in the ingredients list. SLS is a very harsh, stripping chemical that can cause skin conditions including contact dermatitis and, some believe, even cancer. Many manufacturers do not list their shampoo ingredients fully because they do not want consumers to know their ingredients include SLS. Panthenol Pro Vitamin B5 Using Panthenol in hair care products gives hair long lasting moisture, improves manageability, reduces split ends and damage, and adds thickness and shine to the hair.
