Balding, thinning roots and hair-loss associated with dreadlocks

We have received and responded to many questions and concerns regarding whether its a good idea to have locks when a thinning hairline or baldness is present or a potential. When facing thinning-related issues, from male-patterned baldness to simply fine, breakable hair, we recommend you consider carefully the fact that dreadlocks are heavy ropes of hair locked up with the thousands of hairs you normally would have shed and lost. This extra weight and added movement as they swing around is not going to do any favors to your already delicate hair-line. If you already have locks and aren't ready to say goodbye to them, but want to minimize the damage, its a good idea to protect the roots with a strong, stretchy dreadband, hair wrap or hat to prevent excessive yanking and snapping of the hairs at the roots. We also do not recommend skinning your locks back into a ponytail for this reason, as all that weight is now hanging off a few already-fragile roots around the hairline. For more information about dreadlock-related thinning and baldness, Google 'traction alopecia' where you will find a considerable amount of information about this hair-loss condition suffered by both women and men.

I am a 58 year old female and have been locking my hair for years (10 or more) and now my hair is thinning due to the locking. At this point of my hair life, I don't know what to do; it doesn't look good and I'm at a point where maybe I should just cut them off and find another hair style, but what? I like the natural hair, but I dont' know what to do because of the thinning. I treat my hair with hair vitamines and other products. The hair will grow, but is still thin. I'm open for suggestions. Please advise. Thanks!

For thinning hair I recommend twisting them together, 2 or 3 maybe

I am 18 and am thinking about getting dreadlocks. I was planning on making them myself at home and I have dark curly hair incase that makes any difference. My problem is that I REALLY DON'T want to go bald EVER. So will dreads have any effects on my hair which could lead to some sort of hair loss, balding or thinning. I wasn't planning on keeping them for 10 years or anything, only about 4 or so at the most. Also they were going to be about 5 inches long, not like the massive dreads some people have.

How much hair should I put into each dread?
My boyfriend wants his hair dreading and me and a frined
are going to help him do it. His hair is quite fine and thin, and
is about shoulder length. How much hair should we put in each
dread. Some sites say about an inch square. You say about an
index finger. Does this mean the size of the square on the scalp
(as this would be a lot smaller thatn an inch square)? Or does this mean the bunch of hair should be an inch thick (as this woul be a lot
more than an inch given his hair is quite thin)? Also is a 4oz pot of wax enough to start the all or do we need more?

Cant wait to hear from you!
