Removing Dreadlocks

Info, tips and tricks for successful dreadlock removal.

article How do I use the removal kit?
There’s a pretty simple step by step here:1) soak your hair in the hottest water you can handle2) scrub your scalp and dreads with the shampoo 3) rinse out all those bubblies! 4) massage in the removal conditioner (do not rinse out) 5) starting at the bottom of your locks, pick out the knots using the pick on a (preferably) metal tail-comb for a couple inches, then comb smooth 6) work your way up the dread to the rootTIP: hair is elastic when wet, and more maneuverable. Put some...

article How long will it take me to undread myself?
Well, how long have you had your dreads? How did you put them in? What condition is your hair in? Basically, we're trying to say that there are so many factors that decide how hard or easy it’ll be to unlock, that we can’t tell you. We can estimate this much: a long time. As in, many hours. You may even want to make it a two-day job. The removal kit isn’t a magic pill for your hair, so you will need to use a fair bit of elbow grease. The more elbows you have working on it, the...

article How many kits do I need?
One should be plenty if your hair is up to medium length and if you haven’t had your dreads for more than 4 or 5 years. Use your judgment, if your dreads are rock hard you might need a little bit more. And keep in mind that you’ll want to use any leftover conditioner for at least a couple weeks after the removal.

article I have successfully removed my locks with your removal kit, but still have some shampoo and conditioner left over. Can I still use it on my regular hair?
Sure! The conditioner is really useful immediately after the removal as a leave-in. You can try using a mixture of conditioner/water in a spray bottle like we mention in the How To. It will keep your hair from standing on end while it gets used to a new level of gravity. So to speak.

article I want to use your kit to remove my dreads... will my hair be in ok condition after?
If you’ve removed your dreadlocks with care, your hair will be just fine. For the first few days, it will be a little “shocked” – standing up more, and it might be much curlier than it was (it’s basically been in the worlds smallest curlers for the duration of the locks.) Using a diluted little bit of removal conditioner will weigh it down enough to pass as normal! You’ll need to get a trim for sure, but your hair will be in good shape if it started out that way. Hair that was...

article I'm in the process of taking my dreads out and it seems like loads of hair is coming out! Is this normal?
Don't panic — it's perfectly normal!Think about it, before you were Knotty, every time you brushed and styled your hair little bits came out on your brush, right?Well, when your hair is in locks all those hairs that would ordinarily fall out with regular styling are staying inside the dreads, hence why it looks like there's LOADS of hair coming out at once.Fret not, you won't end up patchy.

article Why should I use a Removal Kit instead of regular conditioner?
The Emergency Kit is two parts: the Shampoo is designed to remove our wax, but it also takes care of environmental buildup – and trust me, if you’ve had your dreads for any amount of time, you’ve got some. But it’s really the Conditioner in the kit that’s the magic ingredient – it’s a super slippery formula that coats your hair, letting you pull out those knots with minimal breakage. This doesn’t mean that you can start hacking away with a comb – you can’t attack your hair...
