As you may know, a percentage of each purchase you make through the Knotty
Boy site not only goes toward the continued sponsorship of our
twelve little guys
in under-developed countries, but also to other worthy causes out there.
We’re just bursting with excitement to tell you about all the awesome
places to which we were able to give money last year!
In 2007, you Knotty ones made it possible for us to make a generous
contribution to
Chernobyl Children’s Project International who assist and house
children who are victims of our world’s worst nuclear disaster. If you
want to see why we chose CCPI to contribute to,
watch this video
– you will understand why they need help so desperately. *hands you a
tissue*
And while you have it handy… We were devastated to find out last summer
that our very first, and eldest, sponsored child
Memory
Kalieka passed away suddenly from malaria complications, along
with another child at her school. Knotty Staff was heartbroken, as you can
imagine, and we resolved to contribute the most we could to ensure this
did not occur at her school again. In honor of Memory, at our request the
Malawi Day School set up a special Malawi Medical Fund to which we
contributed, and we’ve just heard that the Board at
CHER International was so
moved by our efforts to help that they matched our donation, giving the
Malawi school twice as much with which to buy medical supplies and
vaccinations! We are so grateful that out of this tragic situation some
wonderful good has come.
Locally, contributions were made to
BC Children’s Hospital
(again, nothing more heartbreaking than sick little ones),
The Kettle Friendship Society
who provides support and services to those living with mental illness in
Vancouver, and Meow-Aid No-Kill
Shelter for Homeless Cats, because who doesn’t love sad kitties,
even a little bit?

And since ‘tis the season to be full of Valentiney frolics and thoughts of
lurrrrrrve, we here at the Knotty Boy DreadQuarters have decided to spread
the love a little further by way of some easy Knotty Boy monthly
fundraising efforts! Each month Knotty Boy has been picking a
charitable cause that particularly tugs at our heartstrings and conducting
fund-raisers for it. Check out what we’ve done so far!
We kicked it all off in December by setting up a drop-box at
The Knotty Boy Lock Shop & Salon
for collecting items for holiday hampers. The overflowing drop-box
was later distributed amongst the needy by
Creekside Community Church
right here in Vancouver. Some of the Knotty Staff also participated in the
Vancouver
Christmas Charity Toy Drive by getting down to the Pan Pacific
hotel in the wee hours of a cold December morning to drop off sparkly new
toys (and eat a delicious complimentary breakfast). Over 12,000 toys
were donated and distributed through this effort to under-privileged
children around Vancouver, and we helped!

January ‘08 brought about the Official Knotty Boy Cell Phone
Drive, where the Knotty
Boy Lock Shop & Salon collected over 90 used, broken, drowned and
hilarious old cell phones, PDAs and chargers for the amazing organization
Global Peace Containers. 90
phones in one month, Knotty kids - we can’t even get over it, and it was
so easy!
GPC is a non-profit that recycles these phones for eco-refunds, and then
uses the proceeds to purchase old shipping containers which are converted
into sustainable housing and community buildings for use in developing
countries. Wicked, no? And added bonus of NOT committing the vilest of
eco-crimes - throwing your old cell phone out with the garbage and
poisoning even more fishies with mercury. Double points. Through
announcements made through our MySpace and Facebook pages, this has been
so incredibly successful that a permanent cell phone drop-box will be
kept in the Shop indefinitely for anyone looking to recycle their old
cell phones and parts. So bring us your dang phones, OR set up your own
drop-box at work, school or with a group of friends and send ‘em in! IDEA:
It would only take a matter of hours to leave flyers house to house in
your neighborhood asking people to hang their old phones in a plastic bag
on their door knobs on a certain day, and you just go pick ‘em all up.
Imagine!

Finally, our February charity focus is for the wonderful
organization ChariTree, who
creates and supports tree planting projects that benefit kids, for which
we have planned Knotty-Oke! Come down to
Hoko’s Sushi and Karaoke Bar
in Vancouver on Saturday March 1st to check out performances by
kick-ass bands The Scorched Earth Policy (melt-your-face-off metal) and
Bad News Baby-Sitters (hot chick rock featuring
Becca, Knotty
Stylist and member of Vancougar). These performances will be followed by
the opportunity to pay for willing and unwilling Knotty Staff to
loudly sing Celine Dion and Meatloaf karaoke songs in public. Hence,
should you happen to find yourself in Vancouver on that fateful Saturday
night, please come join the silliness! We might even let you sing if you
don’t laugh too much at us. Or make a large contribution. Otherwise rowdy
Knotty staff is guaranteed to bogart the mic, as per usual.

Yes, we MAY have spent some time at Hoko’s before.
Full details of ongoing monthly Charity projects will be regularly posted
on our
Facebook group, our
MySpace page
and of course, in the News section on the front page of
the Knotty Boy website. And
hey, if any of these ideas causes your giving-nerve to tingle, get off yer
butt and do it with us – we’d love to hear how it goes!
