Knotty Boy products are colour-gentle, but cannot be said to be colour-safe.

While our products are very gentle, are sulfate free, and are not excessively high foaming, three things that are said to be necessary for colour safe products, many colour safe shampoos that are specifically marketed this way are acidic. Our products cannot be acidic as they are completely all natural and not made with added surfactants.

Additionally, our products are pH neutral (7) while colour safe hair care products are acidic, usually pH 4 to pH 5. Acidic products shock the hair follicle, closing the shaft and helping to retain colour from being washed away.

Colour safe products, so marketed, also contain uv filters and resins which coat the shaft, putting a micro thin plastic like coating on the shaft and keeping the colour sealed in. These are obviously totally synthetic, chemical based products, and we do not use any such ingredients in our products.
