One WHOLE Year!

For the last few months your dreads have been easier to care for by the day, and from now on it's smooth sailing, friends. Fully matured dreadlocks have a felted appearance and don't require the constant backcombing of earlier stages. They'll still have some loose hair here and there, but less of it as time passes. You've worked hard and stayed the course, now you get to reap the benefits - hair that'll pretty much care for itself!

Maintenance Techniques

Even when your dreads look great, a little bit of continued maintenance will keep your locks on the right track, especially at the roots. Make sure to separate any locks that have started joining at the scalp to prevent matting, and continue to root rub; your dreads might look totally boss now, but that new hair still needs your help to knot up. Wash, wet palm roll, dry, root rub, palm roll. If you do this once a week, you should be looking at about 45 minutes over two days. (That averages out to be less than 6.5 minutes a day!)

1. Every once in a while, one or more of your dreads will do something crazy! DON'T PANIC. No matter how rockin' your 'locks look right now, one morning you'll wake up having developed a wild hair in the night. Literally. An 'S' shape, or a bump in the middle of a previously perfect dread. This is normal stuff, because there's no such thing as 'perfect'. Just keep palm rolling once in a while, and don't sweat the small stuff.

2. Try new things! There are a few products we don't recommend to the Newly Knotty but you, friend, have arrived! Light conditioners are no longer a threat to your dreads, so go ahead and try out one of our All Purpose Shampoo Bars for a new scent in the shower. If you chemically colour your 'locks or spend a lot of time at the beach, your hair can dry out and become brittle faster than before you had dreads. (The natural oils that would usually coat your hair have a tough time getting through those knots to the ends. It's sort of how you have dreadlocks.) Keep them healthy with Dreadlock Conditioning Spray - it'll safely moisturize your thirsty hair without jeopardizing all your hard work.
