Can i dread my hair without wax?

Totally! There are a bazillion different ways of starting locks, and everyone that does them has their own special combo of tricks up their sleeve. There are a ton of testimonials online praising the necessity of starting your locks with everything from toothpaste to honey to pureed fruit. We got an email once from a guy who started his dreads using grease! GREASE! Bet I don't have to tell you that he was asking for help. I can tell you right now, that there aren't a ton of "rules" for staring dreads, but here's a good one: don't put food in your hair. Other than that, you've got a lot of options!

The method that we describe in full detail on the site is the one that is used by most salons (not ours, but that's another FAQ section!) for doing dreads. It has been proven over and over by our Knotty Family to be the one that is the most fail-proof for starting dreads at home. You really can't go wrong with that method, since it makes your hair easy to keep clean. The wax really holds it together during a shampoo.

If you aren't opposed to using products, but would prefer not to use wax, you can try our Tightening Gel. Just apply it after washing and palmroll as normal. You'll probably have to do a little more backcombing after shampooing, but it really locks up fast! And no one's saying you need to use product at all! If you prefer, just keep palmrolling and backcombing, and your knots will eventually start to hold together. Don't get discouraged from shampooing though!
